Introducing Roots to Table: A Youth-Led Initiative for a Stronger, Healthier Community

At Dr. G’s Lab, we are passionate about harnessing the power of fresh ideas, the kind that only young minds can dream up.

It is with immense pride that we unveil our latest project, Roots to Table, a groundbreaking initiative driven by none other than Gino, a spirited 13-year-old visionary whose heart beats for community, sustainability, and innovation.

A Seed of an Idea

The journey of Roots to Table began with Gino, whose eyes were opened to the challenges families face when accessing fresh, nutritious food. Seeing how middle-income families are often overlooked—struggling between not qualifying for assistance like CalFresh and finding it hard to afford fresh produce on a regular basis—Gino had a bold idea. What if we could bridge that gap by rescuing food that would otherwise go to waste and providing it directly to families? An idea rooted in empathy, action, and a commitment to making a difference.

Validated by Rising Stars in UX Research

Every great idea needs research to support it, and Roots to Table was no different. We were fortunate to collaborate with two brilliant and dedicated up-and-coming UX researchers, Charlotte and Menghan. Their efforts in conducting user research and gathering insights were pivotal in ensuring that Gino’s vision was validated and shaped to meet real community needs. Their dedication proved that passion and skill come in all forms, regardless of how much experience someone has or where they’re from.

Expert Guidance for a Strong Start

Launching a project of this magnitude isn’t just about heart—it’s also about strategy. That’s why we enlisted Angela, a nonprofit consultant who helped us weigh our options between forming a standalone nonprofit or opting for a fiscal sponsorship. Her guidance illuminated a path that allowed us to focus on what matters most: building connections and serving our community effectively.

Designed by Youth, For Community

The logo and branding for Roots to Table? They were all Gino’s handiwork. He chose the colors and design that spoke to the essence of the project, echoing the voice and vibrancy of youth-led innovation. This authenticity is at the core of our project and at the heart of what we do at Dr. G’s Lab.

Empowering Overlooked Talent

One of the pillars of Dr. G’s Lab is our commitment to providing opportunities to those often overlooked. Our developers for Roots to Table hail from an underdeveloped country, talented individuals who often miss out on opportunities due to their backgrounds or because they don’t have a name that resonates in traditional Western circles. We believe that talent knows no borders, and by investing in diverse voices, we cultivate a richer, more inclusive world.

The Power of Youth Voices

Perhaps the most profound aspect of Roots to Table is that it’s a testament to what happens when we listen to youth and allow them to solve problems in their own way. At Dr. G’s Lab, we know that youth are not just the future; they’re the present. They see challenges through a different lens, one that is imaginative, direct, and inherently compassionate. By empowering Gino’s idea, we aim to inspire others to take youth seriously and consider their ideas as solutions to real-world problems.
